Internet F.A.Q
1. I can get web pages but can't get email, what is happening?
A: Typically there are 2 things that cause this both are related to security programs
1. You have a firewall, like Norton Internet Security or MacAfee Personal Firewall and that firewall software has blocked your email programs access to the internet. To test for this check webmail, go to http://webmail.hbci.com (in St. Charles http://mail.hbcsc.net) and log in there. If that works then you need to go into the firewall settings and allow your email program access or disable/remove the firewall software from your computer.
2. If you see an error, look at the error message and note the name of the server, if it says 127.0.0.1 for the mail server then your antivirus program has changed the server settings to enable a mail scanning proxy. In this case the proxy isn't working and you will need to reset your mail server settings to mail.hbci.com (in St. Charles mail.hbcs.net)
2. I can’t get any new email
A: It is likely your email account is over the server limit; all accounts are limited to 30 megabytes of mail storage. You will need to move messages from your inbox to other folders or delete messages. Commonly if you use our webmail system all you need to do is click on the “purge deleted items” link on the right side of the webmail page to remove old deleted messages.
3.What are the names of your mail server?
A: The name of our mail server is mail.hbci.com (in St Charles mail.hbcsc.net)
4.I can’t get to some web pages, like banking or other secure websites?
A: The most likey cause is that your web browser (MS Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape etc.) is out of date and needs to be updated. Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to update you computer and then download the type of web browser software you are using.
5.My connection is slow and it takes a long time to do anything on my computer, do I have a virus?
A: When a computer starts to run slow and your connection is running much slower than normal, a virus is the most common problem. We recommend even if you have an anti-virus program like Norton or MacAfee on your system that you do an online virus scan such as the one at http://www.bitdefender.com The online scan may not be able to fix or remove a virus infection but it should detect if your computer is infected.
If your computer comes up clean then it is time to look at spyware, install anti-spyware programs like Spybot Search and Destroy (http://security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware (http://lavasoft.de) and if you have windows XP Windows Defender (http://microsoft.com). Scan your computer with these products and see if that helps.
Finally if the computer is still running slow, you may have too many things loading at startup. Use a program like msconfig.exe to find out what is being loaded at startup or look into adding additional main memory to your computer.
